The City of Sheboygan is taking an important step toward shaping its future with the release of the draft update to its Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map. What the Comprehensive Plan Covers

The Comprehensive Plan acts as a long-term guide for decisions about the city’s growth. It covers:

  • Land use: How different parts of the city will be used, including residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

  • Housing: Plans to meet the community’s housing needs, including affordable options.

  • Economic development: Strategies to support local businesses and attract new opportunities.

  • Transportation: Improvements to roads, public transit, and pedestrian pathways.

  • Infrastructure: Upgrades to utilities and public services.

  • Community facilities: Development of parks, schools, and other public spaces.

The current plan dates back to 2011. Updating it ensures Sheboygan stays aligned with Wisconsin State Statutes and reflects the community’s current priorities and trends.

Future Land Use Map

A key part of the draft is the updated Future Land Use Map. This map shows where different types of development are planned or encouraged. It helps city leaders and developers make informed decisions about where to build new homes, businesses, or public facilities. The map aims to balance growth with preserving the character of neighborhoods and natural areas.

How Residents Can Get Involved

Community input is vital to shaping the final plan. The Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission will host two public open house sessions where residents can learn more and share feedback:

Date: Thursday, March 19, 2026

Location: Uptown Social, 2608 N. 8th Street, Sheboygan, WI 53081

Times: 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

These sessions provide a chance to ask questions, discuss concerns, and suggest ideas. The feedback collected will help refine the plan before it moves through the city’s review and adoption process.

Why This Matters to Sheboygan Residents

This update is more than just a document. It shapes how Sheboygan will grow, where new homes and businesses will be located, and how the city will maintain its quality of life. By participating in the review process, residents can help ensure the plan reflects their vision for the community’s future.

Taking part in the open houses or reviewing the draft online is a chance to influence decisions that will affect daily life, from traffic patterns to neighborhood character. The plan will guide investments and policies for years to come, making this a critical moment for community involvement.
